Summary

A. C. Corcoran Elementary is a large PK-5 public school in North Charleston, SC, serving 743 students within the Charleston 01 school district.

Corcoran faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 2-3% of all elementary schools in South Carolina for the past three years. While the school receives substantial financial investment—spending $20,324 per student, nearly double that of the highly-rated Howe Hall AIMS Elementary just 2.24 miles away—this funding has not translated into strong outcomes. The most pressing issue is a severe chronic absenteeism crisis: 41.1% of students were chronically absent in 2024-2025, nearly double the district rate of 20.5% and the state rate of 22.3%. This rate has been climbing steadily from 24.0% in 2021-2022, meaning a large portion of students are missing critical instructional time. The school also serves a student body with significant economic need, as indicated by a 100% free/reduced lunch rate in recent years.

There is a glimmer of hope, however. In 2025-2026, 3rd-grade ELA proficiency jumped to 39.6%, up from 22.1% the previous year—a substantial year-over-year gain that may signal early-literacy interventions are beginning to work. Still, this remains far below the district average of 68.8%. The contrast with nearby schools is stark: Hanahan Elementary and Westview Elementary in the neighboring Berkeley 01 district rank in the 38th and 40th percentiles respectively, while Howe Hall AIMS Elementary achieves over 90% proficiency in ELA and Math. This juxtaposition demonstrates that high achievement is possible in the same geographic area, making the challenges at Corcoran even more pronounced and pointing to a need for a comprehensive, targeted turnaround strategy focused on attendance and early literacy.
