Summary

R. B. Stall High is a large public high school in North Charleston, SC, serving 2,135 students in grades 9-12 within the Charleston 01 school district.

Stall High faces significant challenges that set it apart from nearby schools. Academic proficiency is notably low, with only 38.31% of students proficient in English 1 and 42.15% in U.S. History, compared to 95.55% and 89.93% respectively at Charleston School of the Arts. Even Goose Creek High outperforms Stall in U.S. History proficiency (54.62% vs. 42.15%). The school also struggles with student engagement: 53.9% of students are chronically absent—more than double the district rate of 20.5%—and the dropout rate of 5.9% is nearly three times the state average. While the graduation rate has improved modestly to 77.8%, it remains well below the district's 90.6% and the state's 86.7%.

Despite spending $18,862 per student—significantly more than Hanahan High ($14,018) and Fort Dorchester High ($11,548)—outcomes have not improved. In fact, the school's state ranking has declined from the 22nd percentile to the 9th percentile over the past few years. Interestingly, Fort Dorchester High, located just two miles away with a similar student population, achieves a 94.8% graduation rate and a 27.5% chronic absenteeism rate, suggesting school-specific factors are at play. One positive note: English 2 proficiency (67.89%) is dramatically higher than English 1 (38.31%), suggesting students who persist may benefit from interventions. However, the school's Gifted and Talented students rank in the bottom 1st percentile statewide, indicating even high-achieving students may not be adequately challenged.

Open Quote I am a new person attending R B Stall High. Before i started going to this school i was scared. I just moved from an area and all my friends were going to a different high school. I was upset at first, but then i realized something. If you don't try something how do you know how it is going to turn out. So i gave R B Stall a chance and it didn't let me down, not at all!
