Summary

Baptist Hill High in Hollywood, SC, serves 507 students in grades 6-12 as part of the Charleston 01 school district, and it has become one of the most dramatic turnaround stories in the state. Just four years ago, the school ranked in the bottom 1% of South Carolina high schools; today it sits at the 47th percentile—a 93-point jump that no nearby school can match. The school now outperforms peer institutions like Burke High and St. Johns High in overall ranking, and its English 1 proficiency rate of 79.71% beats the district average by 11 points and tops West Ashley High, Fort Dorchester High, and Summerville High.

Perhaps the most striking improvement is in attendance. Chronic absenteeism has plummeted from 44.8% in 2022-2023 to just 9.2% today—now the lowest among all comparable schools in the area, including Palmetto Scholars Academy (28.6%) and Ashley Ridge High (26.7%). The school also ranks in the top quarter of the state for serving its African American students (76th percentile), and its low-income student ranking has climbed to the 64th percentile. With a 9:1 student-teacher ratio and per-student spending of $31,999—roughly triple what Summerville High spends—the district's investment is clearly yielding results.

Still, challenges remain. Middle school math proficiency is alarmingly low (1.4% in 8th grade vs. 44.5% district-wide), U.S. History scores lag 20 points behind the district average, and the dropout rate of 4.8% is more than double the state average. Graduation rates have also been volatile, swinging from 76.5% to 87.5% in a single year. The school is at an inflection point—the foundation is solid, but sustaining this momentum will require continued focus on the middle grades and remaining academic gaps.
