Summary

Calhoun Academy of the Arts is a public magnet elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Anderson, South Carolina, part of the Anderson 05 school district. With 441 students, the school has been rated 2-3 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger, indicating average performance compared to other elementary schools in the state.

Calhoun Academy faces several challenges, including lower test scores than the district and state averages, high chronic absenteeism rates, and uneven performance across student subgroups. For example, in 2024-2025, only 53% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 57.5% for the district and 61.8% statewide. The school also spends more per student ($13,711 in 2023-2024) than nearby schools, which may indicate higher resource allocation. Interestingly, Calhoun Academy is located in close proximity to several higher-performing elementary schools in the Anderson 05 district, such as North Pointe Elementary, Midway Elementary, and Concord Elementary, which have significantly better academic outcomes.

Despite its magnet school status, Calhoun Academy's performance has been somewhat inconsistent over the years, with its statewide ranking fluctuating between 291st and 406th out of around 640 elementary schools. This suggests the school may be struggling to maintain consistent academic progress, which could be related to the high poverty level of its student population, as indicated by the 100% free and reduced-price lunch rate. Addressing these issues may require a closer examination of the school's curriculum, instructional practices, and support for students and families.
