Summary:

The Richland 02 school district in the Columbia/Blythewood area of South Carolina is home to five high schools serving grades 9 through 12, with a combined enrollment of roughly 9,100 students. The district itself ranks in the middle of the pack statewide, earning a 3-star rating, but there are significant performance gaps between its top and bottom schools.

For parents, the standout choice is clearly Blythewood High, which leads the district in state ranking (85th), graduation rate (93.9%), and test scores in English and U.S. History. It also has by far the lowest chronic absenteeism rate at 14.5%, compared to the district's other schools which range from 21.9% to 28.8%. At the other end of the spectrum, Richland Northeast High struggles the most, with the lowest graduation rate (78.1%), highest dropout rate (3.4%), and lowest test scores—despite spending the most per student at $16,712. The middle tier includes Spring Valley High, Ridge View High, and Westwood High, which all post similar, unremarkable results. Westwood is a particular concern, with the second-lowest graduation rate (82.3%) and a chronic absenteeism rate (28.7%) nearly as high as Richland Northeast's.

Several patterns stand out. First, more spending does not equal better outcomes—Richland Northeast and Westwood both spend more per student than Blythewood yet perform worse. Second, attendance appears to be a strong predictor of success, as the schools with the lowest absenteeism have the best results. Third, there is a notable bright spot: Richland Northeast's Algebra 1 proficiency jumped from 42.9% to 65.3% in one year, suggesting a targeted math intervention is working. However, every school except Blythewood falls below the state average in English 1 proficiency, indicating a district-wide literacy challenge. Finally, both Blythewood and Spring Valley have seen their state rankings decline over the past three years, which is worth monitoring.
