Summary

Blythewood High is a large public high school in Blythewood, SC, serving 2,164 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Richland 02 school district. The school has historically been a top performer in the state, though its overall ranking has slipped in recent years—from 25th in the state in 2018-2019 to 85th for 2025-2026. That said, the school continues to shine in several important areas that matter to families.

Academically, Blythewood High is a standout in English and U.S. History. For 2025-2026, U.S. History proficiency hit 73%, which is 14 points above the district average and 10 points above the state. English 2 proficiency reached nearly 85%, also above both district and state averages. The school's graduation rate is a strong 93.9%, well ahead of the district (86.6%) and state (86.7%) averages, and chronic absenteeism has dropped dramatically from 20% to 14.5%—now far below the state average of 22.3%. The main academic concern is Algebra 1, where proficiency has declined steadily from 82.3% in 2022-2023 to 54.8% in 2025-2026, now below both district and state averages. This is the school's most pressing challenge.

What truly sets Blythewood apart is its success with student subgroups. The school ranks in the 89th percentile statewide for Hispanic students (14th of 124 schools) and the 78th percentile for African American students—both well above average. It also outperforms its nearby district peers by a wide margin. Westwood High, just 2.75 miles away, has a graduation rate of 82.3% (11.6 points lower) and chronic absenteeism of 28.7% (double Blythewood's rate). The school also spends less per student ($12,801) than several neighbors while achieving better outcomes. The one equity concern is performance among low-income students, which has dropped significantly in the past two years—an area worth watching as the school works to support all learners.

Open Quote Beware! BHS is not all it seems. It's ok if you are the kind of parent who is hands on and involved. Otherwise your child's future will suffer at the hands of this school. You must fight to be involved and common sense is not the chosen method for decision making. There are a few gems...Mrs Byrd, Mr. Kelly, Mrs Moore, Mrs Oneal, Mrs. Drake ford, Mr. Sherman, Mrs. cribs, and Mrs. Canzater. The custodians are very nice as well. The Athletics program is a big clique where most kids are left out even the ones included are not led to success. The AD is on his way out and could care less about managing programs. My kid graduated last year and was able to play at the collegiate level but with NO help from the AD or her coach. Do your research and don't be dazzled by the "pretty" Close Quote
