Summary:

The Berkeley 01 school district in South Carolina serves more than 30,000 students across 46 schools from Pre-K through 12th grade, spanning urban, suburban, and rural communities from the Charleston-adjacent Daniel Island area to the rural towns of Cross and St. Stephen.

This is a district of stark contrasts. At the top, Daniel Island School and Howe Hall AIMS Elementary rank in the top 2% of elementary schools statewide with 5-star ratings, while Cainhoy Elementary and Cross Elementary sit in the bottom 15%. The geographic divide is clear: schools in the Daniel Island/Philip Simmons and Cane Bay/Nexton areas consistently outperform those in rural northern communities and older Goose Creek neighborhoods. Marrington Middle School of the Arts stands out among middle schools, ranking in the 93rd percentile, while Berkeley County Middle College High achieves a perfect 100% graduation rate. Among traditional high schools, Cane Bay High leads with a 91.4% graduation rate, while Stratford High—the district's largest school—has the lowest graduation rate at 82% and struggles with chronic absenteeism.

Chronic absenteeism is a district-wide concern, averaging 23.9%—above the state average. High-performing schools like Daniel Island (6.9%) and Howe Hall (6.7%) have remarkably low absenteeism, while struggling schools like Goose Creek Elementary (36.4%) and Goose Creek High (33.7%) exceed 33%. Interestingly, per-student spending doesn't predict success: St. Stephen Middle spends the most ($23,473 per student) yet ranks in the 32nd percentile, while Cane Bay Middle spends the least ($11,441) and ranks higher. The district's specialty programs—including the arts magnet and early college high school—demonstrate that focused educational models can produce exceptional results, even as the district overall earns a 3-star rating.
