Elementary Schools in Chariho

Chariho has three elementary schools—Richmond Elementary School, Charlestown Elementary School, and Ashaway Elementary School—all serving kindergarten through grade 4. In 2025–26, all three exceeded the state’s all-grades proficiency results in both English language arts (ELA) and math. Their average was 41.6% in ELA, 8.5 percentage points above the state, and 47.3% in math, 15.4 points above it. The clearest area-wide strength is math, where the schools’ average advantage over the state is 6.9 points larger than in ELA.

Richmond stands out at the top overall, with 47.2% proficient in ELA and 52.0% in math; Ashaway is close behind in math at 50.5%, while Charlestown is lowest in both subjects, at 35.7% in ELA and 39.3% in math. The gap between the highest and lowest school is 11.5 points in ELA and 12.7 in math. Grade-level results add an important distinction: Richmond leads grade 3 in both subjects and grade 4 ELA, while Ashaway narrowly leads grade 4 math, 53.4% to 53.1%. Charlestown grade 3 math is the sharpest exception: 26.2%, 10.9 points below the state, compared with its 47.1% grade 4 result.

Scores fell from 2024–25 across the group: average ELA proficiency dropped 12.3 points and math fell 10.5 points. Richmond was the exception in math, rising 3.1 points, while Charlestown and Ashaway fell 19.5 and 15.1 points, respectively. SchoolDigger ranks the district 17th of 61 with four stars; its latest school ranks are 35th for Richmond, 72nd for Charlestown, and 44th for Ashaway, all lower than in 2023–24. Context measures do not neatly match results: Ashaway has the highest student–teacher ratio (15.1) and lunch rate (35.38%) but the second-highest math score, while Richmond and Charlestown have nearly identical lunch rates but notably different results. These figures describe a small group of schools and do not establish why results differ.
