Patton Middle School is one of two middle schools in McMinnville School District 40, serving 646 students in grades 6–8 in McMinnville, a suburban-rural community in Oregon's Yamhill County. It is a high-poverty school — 77.9% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25 — and it ranks in the 42nd percentile of Oregon middle schools in 2025-26 (2 stars), its weakest relative position in the decade of data available. That's striking because the district as a whole ranks 31st of 141 Oregon districts (78th percentile, 4 stars).

On 2025-26 state tests, 36.2% of Patton students met standards in English language arts, 29.3% in math and 25.0% in science — below both the district and the state. Performance splits sharply by grade: 8th grade is the only grade band where Patton tops the state average in ELA (42.0% vs 41.5%) and math (33.2% vs 30.0%), while 6th and 7th grades trail it; the largest single gap is 7th grade ELA (33.3% at Patton vs 48.6% district-wide). Attendance is a genuine bright spot — chronic absenteeism fell from 43.9% in 2022-23 to 24.5% in 2024-25, better than the district and state — but that gain has not yet appeared in test scores, and rankings slipped for nearly every student group in 2025-26, suggesting a school-wide factor rather than one group's issue.

Regionally, Patton outperforms Dayton Junior High School, French Prairie Middle School and Willamina Middle School in math and science and roughly matches Mountain View Middle School in ELA, but trails Chehalem Valley Middle School and Gervais Middle School on ELA — and Gervais reaches 44.0% ELA with a fully high-poverty population and lower per-student spending.
