Summary

Yamhill Carlton Intermediate School is a grade 4–8 middle school in the small town of Yamhill, Oregon, serving 369 students as part of Yamhill Carlton School District 1. In 2025–2026 it ranked 271st of 371 Oregon middle schools — the 27th percentile, or 1 star — a marked drop from the mid-2010s, when it reached the 68th–88th percentile. Since 2021–2022 the school has remained in the bottom third of the state.

Academically, English Language Arts is the relative strength: 40.2% of students met proficiency in 2025–2026, close to the state's 43.8% and above nearby Amity Middle School (38.1%) and Dayton Junior High School (21.6%). Math (21.9% vs. the state's 32.9%) and science (19.0% vs. 30.6%) are roughly 11 points below state averages. Results also split sharply by grade: grades 4 and 5 are at or above state levels in ELA, while grades 6–8 fall below, and grade 8 is a particular concern at 9.7% proficient in math and 8.1% in science. Chronic absenteeism, at 24.2%, is better than the state's 33.5% and better than most nearby schools, though about one in four students is still chronically absent.

Comparisons with nearby schools are mixed. Sherwood Middle School, Duniway Middle School and Chehalem Valley Middle School outperform Yamhill Carlton by wide margins in all three subjects. Chehalem Valley is especially telling: it serves a similar share of students from low-income families (49.76% vs. 50.41%) yet posts ELA 48.7%, math 48.0% and science 39.8%, suggesting demographics alone do not explain the gap. Per-student spending here is $14,384, the lowest among the nearby schools listed, while the student–teacher ratio of 16.3:1 is better than most, having improved from 20:1 in 2022–2023.
