Summary

Mid Valley Elementary School is a K–5 school of 381 students on Davis Drive outside Hood River, Oregon, serving a high-poverty population in the Hood River County School District. It is the lowest-performing elementary in its own district: 538 of 709 schools, 24th percentile, 1 star for 2025–26. This is chronic, not new—from 2014–15 through 2025–26 it never exceeded the 30th percentile, with the last five years in a 20–24 band.

Proficiency trails district and state in every subject. In 2025–26, ELA was 30.6 (district 47.1, state 43.8), math 28.5 (district 36.4, state 32.9), and science 13.8 (district 33.5, state 30.6). Science is the acute weakness—fewer than one in seven met standard. The 4th grade cohort shows the widest gap: ELA 25.8 vs. 51.0 district and math 19.4 vs. 45.1. Nearby, Westside Elementary School has similar enrollment and poverty but spends less ($21,512 vs. $23,247) with larger classes (16.7 vs. 14.3) and double Mid Valley's proficiency in every subject. May Street Elementary School also outperforms it academically, while Parkdale Elementary School ranks similarly and Cascade Locks School ranks higher but is much smaller. Mid Valley has the highest per-pupil spending and smallest classes among comparable Hood River elementaries, and spending rose about 23% from 2021–22 to 2024–25 while rank moved only 21 to 24.

Attendance is a real bright spot: chronic absenteeism fell from 34.5% in 2022–23 to 20.2% in 2024–25, better than district (29.0%) and state (33.5%). English learners rank in the 64th percentile, and migrant students in the 92nd percentile (1 of 13 schools, though that pool is very small); low-income (38th), male (30th), and female (20th) students rank lower. Fifth grade is the strongest cohort—ELA 44.3 is closest to state, and 5th grade math (35.0) exceeds state (32.4). For context, Mid Valley's math proficiency (28.5) is nearly indistinguishable from the highest-poverty schools in neighboring North Wasco County School District 21—Dry Hollow Elementary School (28.0) and Mosier Community School (28.9), which serve 92–100% free/reduced lunch.
