Chenowith Elementary School is a K–5 neighborhood school in The Dalles, Oregon, serving 418 students as one of the two largest elementaries in North Wasco County School District 21, a district that itself ranks near the bottom of Oregon (119th of 141 districts, 16th percentile, 1 star).

On 2025–26 statewide measures, Chenowith ranked 703rd of 709 Oregon elementary schools — the bottom 1%, with zero stars — its lowest mark in a slide that began after 2016–17, when it sat in the 37th percentile with 2 stars. Proficiency stands at 15.2% in English language arts, 9.9% in math, and 6% in science, roughly half the district average and about one-fifth to one-third of the state average. The most striking comparison is Dry Hollow Elementary School: same town, same district, nearly identical enrollment (424) and poverty rate (99.53% versus 100%), yet 34.7% ELA proficiency and 39.5% fifth-grade science against Chenowith's 15.2% and 6%. English learner students rank in the 37th percentile — the only Chenowith group measured above the bottom tier. Third-grade ELA (16.9%) is essentially at district level (17.4%), but gaps widen in grades 4 and 5, where math and science both fall to 6%. Because third-grade reading is weak across the district, that may be a district-wide issue, while science and upper-grade results are the school's own most pressing challenge.
