Summary

Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Gresham, Oregon, with a relatively stable enrollment of around 267 students. The school follows the Montessori teaching philosophy, which emphasizes hands-on, self-directed learning.

Despite the school's relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 26.1% to 45.0% in recent years, Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School consistently outperforms the Gresham-Barlow School District and the state of Oregon in academic proficiency across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school had significantly higher proficiency rates than the district and state in English Language Arts (ELA) and math for grades 7 and 8. This suggests that the Montessori teaching approach may be effective in supporting student learning.

When compared to the nearby traditional public schools, such as Woodland Elementary, Davis Elementary School, and Salish Ponds Elementary School, Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School stands out as a higher-performing option, with stronger academic proficiency rates across multiple grade levels and subjects. However, the school's attendance challenges may be an area of focus for improvement.

Open Quote My family along with several other family's had a horrible experience at this school. I felt like there was inconsistency and a lack of supporting students, also continuing to let students move along with out the basic skills they need in order to move along. Montessori is an amazing theory and I love it, but when done incorrectly chaos occurs and stress within students and teachers make for an unpleasant environment! when a new school has such a high turn over rate...theirs a problem! I hope they get it together for the sake of the children. Close Quote
