Summary

Rockwood Preparatory Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 374 students in grades K-5 in the Reynolds School District in Portland, Oregon. While the school has shown some signs of improvement over the past decade, its academic performance remains significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas.

In the 2024-2025 school year, only 43.9% of 3rd graders at Rockwood Preparatory Academy were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 40.3% statewide and 25.2% in the Reynolds School District. The school's math proficiency rates are particularly low, with only 21.5% of 3rd graders, 11.5% of 4th graders, and 8.3% of 5th graders meeting or exceeding standards. Rockwood Preparatory Academy also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 30.3% to 50.9% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average and the rates of nearby schools in the Reynolds School District.

The school's diverse student population and the varying performance of different subgroups suggest that targeted interventions and support may be needed to address the unique needs of different student demographics. Additionally, the lower per-student spending and higher student-teacher ratios at Rockwood Preparatory Academy compared to nearby Centennial School District 28J schools may be a factor in the school's academic challenges. Addressing attendance and engagement issues, as well as ensuring equitable access to resources and funding, could be important strategies for driving progress at Rockwood Preparatory Academy.

Open Quote My daughter has been going to this school since Kindergarten and is about to finish 1st grade. I love the fact that this school has a longer school year, as this has proven the retension rate of the students. Also, they regularly test the students to make sure they are conitnually being challanged. For example, they worked with my daughter on her reading due to a learning disability and she will be finishing 1st Grade reading with her classmates, while in Math she is doing 3rd grade level!! This school works with a lot of children that come from a hard background (homeless, etc.) and these children receive a lot attention and support where they may not otherwise. :) I'm absolutely happy that my daughter came here and am very sad that she won't be continuing there due to our move abroad. So, whatever the stats say, this school was the best for my daughter. Close Quote
