River Road/Elementary Camino del Rio Elementary School is a K–5 school with 416 students in the northern part of Eugene, Oregon, serving a neighborhood within Eugene School District 4J, one of Oregon's stronger districts.

The big story here is steady improvement and strong attendance. Statewide, the school ranked 336th of 709 elementary schools in 2025–2026 — about the middle of the pack, at the 53rd percentile. That may sound ordinary, but a decade ago this school sat in the 7th percentile, and it has held a stable 45th–53rd percentile range since 2021–2022. Attendance is its clearest advantage: chronic absenteeism was 23.4% in 2024–2025, roughly ten points below both the district (33.0%) and the state (33.5%). In reading, 47.4% of students met standards — above the state and essentially at the district level. Math (34.2%) and science (29.5%) sit close to the state but below the district, and math results slip from 3rd grade through 5th grade, with every grade trailing district averages. Fourth-grade reading, at 55.6%, is a standout.

Two areas deserve a closer look. Low-income students ranked at the 26th percentile, down from the 65th just two years earlier, and English learners ranked at the 23rd percentile; boys also outperform girls by a consistent margin. For comparison, Howard Elementary School is less than a mile away with very similar poverty levels, yet ranks at the 24th percentile with 42.4% chronic absenteeism — a striking contrast. Cesar Chavez Elementary School spends far more per student yet posts lower proficiency in all three subjects. The school also outperforms every Bethel School District 52 school in this group, despite those schools serving more disadvantaged populations. In short: a school with real momentum and excellent attendance habits, with math, science, and support for its lowest-performing groups as the work still ahead.

There are several problems with the ratings here.
1.) Camino del Rio is a Spanish-English bilingual immersion school with the possibility of student earning a certificate of bilingualism if they follow the 12 year program. The test scores reflect the variety in the school population - not the ability or education here.
2.) Camino del Rio has a brand new facility (2017), complete with features to be environmentally friendly, including a school garden, water features, plenty of bike racks and recapturing water. Students have regular access to technology and an open media center.
3.) Over the last decade, the school had some issues with keeping a steady principal, but the current principal for the last several years, Joel Lavin, has been a guiding light and had a positive effect on the school's culture and attitude.
4.) Other activities include the school marimba band, social justice club, Lego Robotics club, Strings program and BEST. Close Quote

El Camino del Rio/ River Road is a neighborhood and dual-immersion Spanish/English elementary school with a caring and committed staff, a top notch music program (marimbas, ukuleles, world music, movement, theater), an engaged and responsive principal and a new school building in the works.

The state test scores don't account for the situation that half of the students come from households in which Spanish is the primary language.

The rankings also don't reflect that in dual-immersion schools, typically test scores are more than made up for in higher grades simply because all of the students can work in two languages. Along with two languages, the children are intentionally made aware of a diversity of other cultures. The Spanish-speaking world is large and contains within in it many cultures. Close Quote
