Summary

Franklin School is a K–8 school of about 310 students on NW 18th Street in Corvallis, Oregon, part of Corvallis School District 509J — and the only school in this comparison group that serves grades past 5th, since every nearby Corvallis peer tops out at grade 5. Two things temper the picture. Fourth grade is Franklin's weakest tested grade (57.7 ELA, 65.4 math) — still above district and state averages, but the one place a nearby school, Bessie Coleman, edges ahead. Franklin also produces these results with the highest student-teacher ratio (20.2) and below-median per-student spending ($20,158) among its same-district peers, suggesting practice and culture rather than extra resources or small classes. Finally, the 2024‑25 free/reduced-lunch rate jumping to roughly 57% matches nearly every nearby school almost exactly, which points to a change in how eligibility is counted rather than a real shift in the student population.

The school has a reputation for excellence in terms of a majority of committed teachers who have taught at the school for many many years, student test performance (hovers in the neighborhood of 90%tile of Oregon schools) and parent involvement. The principal, Aaron Hale, is entering is 4th year and is very well liked. This is a charter school with a lottery system. A friend of mine is a high school teacher and she told me that the Franklin kids are easy to pick out; organized and successful students, Franklin well prepares them for doing well in high school. More community involvement would be great, and adding effective language opportunities would be appreciated. The school has physical ed., and music twice a week and art once a week. Close Quote
