Portland School District 1J enrolls 13,318 students across 10 high schools serving grades 9–12 in Portland, Oregon, ranging from 197 students at Alliance High School to 2,149 at Grant High School — a ten-fold difference in size. The district as a whole ranks #12 of 141 Oregon districts (91st percentile, 5 stars), but that strength is far from uniform: its high schools span the 93rd percentile to the 6th, and 5 stars to 0 stars, averaging 3.1 stars.

Three schools anchor the top tier. Cleveland High School has the district's highest English language arts proficiency (72.8%) and top combined score (57.2%) on the second-lowest spending ($21,502 per student). Lincoln High School leads in science (62.8%) and earned 5 stars three years running. Grant High School is the largest school yet spends the least ($21,007), while posting the highest math proficiency (54.1%) and graduation rate (93.5%). Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School (51st to 84th percentile) and Leodis V. McDaniel High School (41st to 61st) have improved sharply, while Franklin High School and Benson Polytechnic High School sit mid-pack.

At the other end, Roosevelt High School (11.5% math, 70.4% graduation, 53.8% chronic absenteeism) and Jefferson High School (5.6% math, 77.0% graduation) face steep challenges, and Alliance High School is an extreme outlier — 38.8% graduation, 93.8% chronic absenteeism, despite the highest spending ($35,283) and smallest classes (9.1:1), a profile typical of an alternative setting.
