Medford School District 549C is home to four middle schools serving grades 6–8 — Hedrick Middle School, McLoughlin Middle School, Oakdale Middle School, and The Valley School of Southern Oregon — with a combined enrollment of 2,650 students. The Medford School District 549C district overall ranks 71st of 141 in Oregon, at the 50th percentile with 3 stars.

The four schools fall into two tiers. The Valley School of Southern Oregon is the academic standout, posting the group's highest ELA (46.0) and science (48.3) scores, the lowest chronic absenteeism (28.3), and the best state rank (116th of 371, 69th percentile, 3 stars). But it is very small at 127 students, spends the least per student ($6,568), has by far the highest student-teacher ratio (36.2), and its free/reduced-lunch rate is not reported. Hedrick Middle School is the strongest of the three large schools, with 952 students and a science score of 36.5, above both district and state. Its 6th grade ELA score of 30.8 is a clear weak spot, and its state percentile has slipped from 64th to 55th over three years. McLoughlin Middle School and Oakdale Middle School are both rated 2 stars at the 35th and 34th percentile; McLoughlin has the lowest math score (21.4) and Oakdale the lowest science score (15.0).

Chronic absenteeism lines up with achievement across the group: McLoughlin (42.5) and Oakdale (41.4) have the highest rates, well above the district's 35.4 and the state's 33.5, while Valley (28.3) is lowest. Higher spending does not guarantee stronger results here — Oakdale spends the most per student ($17,933) and has the smallest classes (18.8 students per teacher) yet posts the lowest science score, while Valley spends the least and posts the highest. Science is by far the most polarized subject, spanning 33.3 points between schools, compared with a much tighter 7.1-point ELA range. Grade-by-grade results also matter: McLoughlin declines steadily from 6th to 8th grade in both ELA and math, while Hedrick is weaker in 6th grade ELA but stronger in 7th and 8th grade math.
