The city of Union, Oregon has two public schools serving students in Union School District 5: Union Elementary School, which serves grades K–6 with 212 students, and Union High School, which serves grades 7–12 with 166 students. Together they enroll 378 students, and there is no separate middle school — grades 7 and 8 sit inside the high school. The district as a whole ranks 66th of 141 in Oregon, at the 53rd percentile with 3 stars, placing it near the state median.
Union High School is the stronger of the two overall, ranking 92nd of 271 Oregon high schools — the top third of the state — with 3 stars. Its English Language Arts results are a real strength: 47.9% proficiency across all grades, above both the district and state, with 7th grade at 55.2% and 11th grade at 54.5%, each well above state averages. Science is also solid at 27.5%. However, math is a serious weakness at 14.9%, and 11th-grade math proficiency is under 5%, compared with 22.9% statewide. Chronic absenteeism is 38.4% and the graduation rate is 78.6%, both below state averages. The school has also slipped from 4 stars and the 86th percentile in 2023–24.
Union Elementary School is not an overall standout, ranking 465th of 709 elementary schools with 2 stars, and it has held steady around the 34th–38th percentile for three years. It does have bright spots: 3rd-grade ELA is 56.5% versus 41.5% statewide, and 4th-grade math is 48.1% versus 38.9% statewide. But overall ELA (38.9%) and science (12.0%) trail the state, and upper-grade math and science drop sharply — 5th-grade math and 5th-grade science are both 12.0%. The clearest priority across both schools is mathematics.
