Summary

New Riegel High School is a small combined middle and high school serving grades 6–12 with 224 students in the rural village of New Riegel, Ohio, and it is the only building in the New Riegel Local district, so the school's results and the district's results are effectively the same. It is a 4-star school that has not dropped below 4 stars in nine years of history, with a 96.9% graduation rate and chronic absenteeism of just 6.7%, down from 13.8% four years earlier.

Academically, this is a school that beats the state almost everywhere. In 2025–26, 11 of 12 reported state test measures exceeded Ohio's averages; American Government proficiency was 97.5% against a state rate of 71.6%, and American History (89.7%) and 8th-grade science (82.6%) were the strongest results in the comparison group of eight nearby high schools. Absenteeism is the second-lowest among those peers, behind only Hopewell-Loudon Local High School. The 96.9% graduation rate is strong, though six of the eight nearby schools also report 98–100%, so it is a strength rather than a differentiator. Class sizes have tightened to 16 students per teacher, and 39.73% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — well below most neighbors, but rising fast from roughly a quarter two years earlier.

Two areas deserve a closer look. Geometry was the only below-state result in 2025–26, at 35.5% proficient versus 43.3% statewide, and grades 7–8 math has been the persistent soft spot; no 8th-grade math figure was reported that year. The school also ranked 214th of 283 for its gifted and talented subgroup — a bottom-quartile result that sits oddly beside its top-tier overall scores. Overall rank has drifted from the 96th percentile in 2015–16 to the 76th now: still 4 stars, but worth monitoring.
