Summary

Continental Local High School is a small, rural school serving about 194 students in grades 7 through 12 in Continental, Ohio, a community in Putnam County where it is the only high school in the Continental Local district. It ranks 188th of 795 Ohio high schools — the 76th percentile, or 4 stars — in 2025–26, a rebound after a two-year dip. Graduation has been 100% in each of the last four reported years, and chronic absenteeism has fallen from 23.0% five years ago to 6.0% today, the third-lowest rate among the ten nearby high schools.

Academically, the strongest results are in Algebra I (93.5% proficient vs. 61.6% statewide), English II (89.3% vs. 62.7%), American History (85.7% vs. 73.2%), Biology (82.1% vs. 67.0%) and 8th-grade science (76.9% vs. 61.2%). The school beats the state on nine of eleven reported assessments. Its low-income students, about 38% of enrollment, rank in the 76th percentile statewide (4 stars), up from the 33rd percentile a year earlier. Class sizes are relatively lean at 13.8 students per teacher. Still, the neighborhood is competitive: Continental ranks 8th of 11 local schools, behind Miller City High School, Ottoville High School, Kalida High School and Fort Jennings High School, but ahead of Holgate High School and Defiance High School.

The clearest weakness is a narrow math strand. Geometry came in at 33.3% versus 43.3% statewide — below the state for a third straight year and last among reporting peers — and 8th-grade math at 34.6% versus 52.0%, also last locally. Tracking the same grades forward, both math and reading proficiency drop sharply between 7th and 8th grade in three consecutive cohorts, making 8th grade the weakest year in the building. American Government also trails most nearby schools despite beating the state, and special education is the lowest-ranked subgroup. With roughly 30 students per grade, single-year swings should be read as directional.
