Summary

Holgate High School is a small public school in the rural northwest Ohio town of Holgate, serving 216 students in grades 6–12 as part of Holgate Local. For 2025–26 it earned 2 stars and ranked 414th of 795 Ohio high schools—the 48th percentile, just below the state median and slightly below its own district, which is rated 3 stars and ranks 373rd of 773 districts. The headline is a two-year slide: Holgate sat in the 91st percentile with 5 stars in 2020–21 and stayed strong through 2023–24 (75th percentile, 4 stars), then fell to the 49th and 48th percentiles.

There are real structural strengths. Holgate's 2024–25 student-teacher ratio of 9.3 is the lowest among nearby high schools, and chronic absenteeism dropped to 6.8% in 2025–26—well below most neighbors, including Defiance High School at 22.1%. Graduation rates are consistently high at 97.1%. At the same time, 65.28% of students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2024–25, up from 45.96% in 2022–23. Test results are mixed: above the state in 6th grade math and ELA, Biology, English II, and Algebra I, and near the state in Government and American History, but below the state in 7th and 8th grade math and ELA, 8th grade science, and especially Geometry (25% vs. 43.3%).

Geometry is the clearest red flag. It fell from 76.7% in 2022–23 and 75.6% in 2023–24 to 38.9% and then 25%—below every nearby school listed, including Continental Local High School at 33.3%. With only 216 students, single-year swings are normal, but the pattern persists across grades 7–8 and Geometry. Leipsic High School and Continental, which serve similar grade spans, outperform Holgate in most middle-school and end-of-course subjects, and Liberty Center High School (89.54% free/reduced lunch) and Patrick Henry High School (98.9%) outrank it despite higher poverty. Strong attendance and small classes give Holgate a solid foundation; curriculum alignment in Geometry and the upper middle grades looks like the place to dig in.
