Summary

Teays Valley East Middle School is a 452-student school serving grades 6–8 in Ashville, Ohio, one of two middle schools in the Teays Valley Local district, which ranks in the 78th percentile of Ohio districts.

After several years in the middle of Ohio's pack, East has posted four consecutive years of improvement — climbing from the 60th to the 74th percentile statewide and earning 4 stars in 2025–26 for the first time since 2016–17. The gains are broad: in 2025–26 the school beat Ohio's proficiency rate in all eight tested areas, by margins of roughly 7 to 14 points. Much of the improvement comes from students who historically lagged. Low-income students moved from the 43rd to the 92nd percentile in two years, and special education students from the 44th to the 79th. Chronic absenteeism has also fallen sharply, from 39.6% in 2021–22 to 22.8% in 2025–26, though it remains the school's clearest soft spot — higher than Canal Winchester Middle School (17.4%) and Westfall Middle School (16.2%).

Compared with its same-district sibling, Teays Valley West Middle School, East still ranks lower (74th vs. 84th percentile), but the gap has narrowed from 17 to 10 percentile points over three years. East's strength is 6th grade math (66.0, the highest in this comparison group), while 7th- and 8th-grade math and 8th-grade science trail West's. East achieves these results with smaller classes (17.3 students per teacher vs. 22.9) and lower per-pupil spending ($7,107) than most nearby schools it outperforms. One caveat: the school's 100% Algebra I proficiency comes from a small, self-selected group of accelerated students, and every comparison school reports similarly high figures — so it should not be read as a school-wide measure.
