Boardman Center Intermediate School is a large public school in Youngstown, OH, serving 814 students in grades 4–6 in the Boardman Local district. It scores above Ohio averages in every reported subject and grade, especially math: fifth-grade math 76.4 vs. the state’s 59.1, and sixth-grade math 72.5 vs. 56.2. Fourth-grade ELA is 74.8 vs. 61.8, and fifth-grade ELA is 79.0 vs. 70.4. Compared with nearby schools, it is far ahead of Struthers Middle School, Austintown Middle School and Youngstown City schools such as East Middle at PRBerry and Chaney Middle. But it generally trails Poland Middle School, South Range Middle School and Canfield Village Middle School in early-grade reading, science and math.

Absenteeism is improving. The 2025–26 chronic absenteeism rate is 16.8%, better than Boardman Local’s 20.1% and lower than Austintown Middle School’s 24.8% and Struthers Middle School’s 32.2%. Still, South Range Middle School (8.4%), Springfield Intermediate Middle School (10.0%), Poland Middle School (10.9%) and Canfield Village Middle School (13.3%) have lower rates. Economic need is high and rising: 58.72% free/reduced-price lunch in 2024–25, up from 51.65% in 2022–23—similar to Poland’s 56.05% but much higher than Canfield’s 20.41% or South Range’s 26.7%. Staffing is also notable: an 18:1 student-teacher ratio in 2024–25 and $7,986 per-student spending in 2018–19, low versus many nearby districts.

Trends show sixth-grade math rising strongly from 59.6 in 2022–23 to 72.5 in 2025–26, while fifth-grade science fell from 79.1 to 69.8 and fourth-grade math declined from 80.2 to 73.4. Sixth-grade ELA is the weakest subject at 66.8, still above the state’s 56.0 but behind Springfield Intermediate Middle School, Canfield Village Middle School, South Range Middle School and Poland Middle School. Overall, Boardman Center Intermediate School is a solid above-state school with strong math and improving attendance, but science, sixth-grade reading and early math are areas to watch. After grade 6, most students move to Boardman Glenwood Junior High, which has a lower 13.5:1 student-teacher ratio but higher chronic absenteeism at 21.0%.
