Summary

Watkins Memorial High School is a 9–12 comprehensive high school in Pataskala, Ohio — a Licking County community east of Columbus — serving 1,397 students as the only traditional high school in the Southwest Licking Local district. Its most recent state ranking is 237th of 795 high schools (70th percentile, 4 stars), stronger than the district's overall 60th-percentile standing, which is dragged down by SWL Digital Academy, a small online program at the 22nd percentile. For parents, the basics look solid: the school beat the state by 12–18 points in every tested subject in 2025–2026 and has widened that margin each of the last four cycles.

Social studies is clearly the signature strength — 90.5% proficient in American History and 87.7% in American Government, the highest of any comparison school here, including Pickerington High School North, which outranks Watkins overall. Geometry (55.4%) is the relative soft spot, though still ahead of Pickerington High School Central (43.4%). Among the closest peers, Licking Heights High School is nearly identical in size, rank, graduation rate and math results; Watkins leads in social studies, while Licking Heights posts similar results with a much higher low-income share. Watkins also beats Liberty Union High School in four of six subjects and Millersport Junior/Senior High School in five.

Two watch items. Chronic absenteeism hit a five-year high of 27.3%, though that is still the best among the large suburban peers (Pickerington High School North 34.1%, Reynoldsburg High School 46.8%), and the 97.8% graduation rate suggests struggling students are being carried to completion. Classes are also large — a 22.1 student–teacher ratio, the highest in this comparison group — alongside comparatively lean per-pupil spending on the only figure available (2018–19).

Open Quote I am a student. I like this school. It's really small but you know everyone. The school doesn't get much funding so we don't have EVERYTHING. Our sports are horrible. The only things we're good at is track and baseball. Can't wait to get out of there. And there's no diversity what so ever so it's pretty bad being one of the only black people there but everyone is really nice. There hasn't really been too much racism over the years. Nothing I can't handle. Close Quote
