Summary

Leona Ave Middle School is a public school in Shadyside, Ohio, serving grades 3–6 with 190 students, and it belongs to the Shadyside Local district. Despite the "Middle School" name, the state classifies it as an elementary school. In 2025–2026 it ranked 468th of 1,560 Ohio schools — the 70th percentile, or 4 stars. That is a drop from its 2022–2023 peak of 134th of 1,596 (92nd percentile, 5 stars), though it is still above the school's 2015–2019 levels and remains in the top third of Ohio schools. Nearly all students come from low-income homes: 92.11% were eligible for free or reduced lunch in 2024–2025.

Overall, test scores beat the state in almost every grade and subject, with one clear exception: 3rd-grade math, where Leona scored 57.9% versus the state's 62.1%. That is well below nearby schools such as St Clairsville Elementary School (74.1%), The Bridgeport School District - Elementary (79.1%), Bellaire Elementary School (93.4%), Union Local Elementary School (78.5%), and Buckeye West Elementary School (68%), and it has fallen from 75% two years earlier. The upper grades are a real strength. In 5th-grade math, ELA, and science, Leona posted 76.9%, 89.7%, and 76.9%, well ahead of Beallsville Elementary School, Buckeye South Elementary School, and Powhatan Elementary School. Fourth-grade math (80.4%) and ELA (71.4%) also beat the state.

Chronic absenteeism was 19.2%, better than the district's 25.5% and lower than most neighbors, including Jefferson Ave Elementary School (20.4%) and Anna Marie Ayers Elementary School (27.1%); it has improved from 30.2% in 2021–2022. The student-teacher ratio is 13.4, lower than most nearby schools, and per-student spending of $6,734 (2018–2019, the most recent figure available) is the lowest in the comparison group. Female students, students with disabilities, and low-income students have performed particularly strongly. Male student results, however, have softened in recent years and are worth watching.
