The trend line, however, points up: the school climbed from the 8th percentile in 2017–18 to 30th in 2024–25 and 27th in 2025–26.

McGuffey has real bright spots. Algebra I End-of-Course proficiency was 100%, far above the district's 39.2% and the state's 61.6%, though this may reflect a small cohort and should be read with care. Seventh-grade math (54.3%) is above both the district and state, and 5th-grade science (55.6%) and 5th-grade ELA (59.7%) beat the district and same-district peers. The drags are concentrated in middle grades: 6th-grade math (30%) is the lowest among Warren City's K-8 schools, and 4th-grade math, 8th-grade math, 6th-grade ELA, and 8th-grade ELA all fall below state averages. Among the four Warren City K-8s, McGuffey ranks second — behind Jefferson Pk-8 School (33rd percentile) but ahead of Lincoln Pk-8 School and Willard Avenue Pk-8 School.

Chronic absenteeism is McGuffey's defining challenge. At 37.3%, it is better than the district's 43.2% and better than Jefferson's 41.9%, but roughly double nearby LaBrae Intermediate School (14.1%), Southington Elementary School (15.3%), Howland Glen Elementary School (18.4%), Champion Central Elementary School (18.5%), and Bascom Elementary School (19.3%). Those same districts generally outscore McGuffey, and spending alone doesn't explain it: McGuffey's $9,419 per student is more than Champion, Southington, or STEAM Academy of Warren spend, yet those schools score higher. Targeted middle-grade math and ELA intervention, plus continued absenteeism reduction, are the clearest priorities.

Open Quote I am a teacher with McGuffey, soon to be former teacher. There is a culture of disrespect from the students, and the staff receive no help from the administration. This has been going on for years and has lead to chaos in the classroom where some students ignore rules and redirection and distract from the learning that should be taking place. The admin. expect the teachers to handle this but tie our hands when it comes to discipline. They will not allow us to remove disruptive students from class, nor when a student does something so outrageous that it finally warrants the attention of the administration, they do not follow through on the consequences. This school has great teachers but due to the toxic environment created from the lack of respect and consequences for students misbehavior, the education suffers and so do the students who are there to learn and whose parents will take action if needed.
