Summary

John Muir Elementary School is a K–4 school serving 526 students in Parma, Ohio, part of the Parma City district, and it is the largest of the four Parma City elementary schools in its immediate comparison group. It is a 2-star school ranked in the 35th percentile statewide (1020th of 1,560) for 2025–2026, down from the 47th percentile the year before, and it serves a high-poverty population: 67.56% of students qualified for free or reduced lunch in 2023–2024.

Academics are mixed. Fourth grade math is the clear bright spot — 67.3% of students were proficient, matching the state average and beating Ridge-Brook Elementary School (63.2%) and Thoreau Park Elementary School (57.9%), though below the district's 70.2% and far below Dentzler Elementary School (87.6%). Fourth grade English language arts is the most urgent weakness at 47.6% proficiency — a 17.6-point one-year drop from 65.2% and roughly 12–33 points below same-district peers. Third grade also trails district and state averages in both subjects. Gaps between student groups widened in 2025–2026: students with disabilities fell from the 45th to the 8th percentile, and low-income students from the 66th to the 46th percentile.

Attendance has improved substantially since the pandemic, with chronic absenteeism falling from 48.6% in 2021–2022 to 20.2% in 2025–2026. That is below the district's 24.4% and far below nearby Cleveland schools such as Denison (57.7%) and Cleveland Preparatory Academy (73.3%). Still, Dentzler Elementary School (12.5%), Ridge-Brook Elementary School (15.6%) and Global Village Academy (4.6%, less than a mile away) do better. Classes here are the largest among same-district peers, with a student-teacher ratio of 19.4, and per-student spending of $12,414 (2018–2019) is the highest of the four — yet Dentzler spends slightly less and posts stronger results.
