Summary

Ulysses S. Grant Middle School is a large public school serving about 917 students in grades 6–8 in Marion, Ohio, part of Marion City schools, a district that ranks near the bottom of Ohio's 773 districts. The school is by far the largest of the nearby campuses compared here — the only similar-sized one is John C Dempsey Middle School, and most others enroll a few hundred students.

Its results have been flat for a decade: 1 star (out of 5) every year since 2015‑16, with a state percentile that has never risen above 27. On the 2025‑26 Ohio State Tests, Grant averaged 31.3% proficient across seven grade-level tests against a 56.4% state average — last or second-to-last on every one of those tests among ten nearby schools. River Valley Middle School averaged 58.1% on the same tests, and Elgin Middle School averaged 52.9%. The striking exception is Algebra I: 91.1% proficient, above Ohio's 61.6% and above the district's 58.4% — the only measure where the school beats the state. Underneath it, general math is very weak, especially 7th-grade math at 5.9% proficient (roughly one in seventeen students at grade level), the lowest figure in this comparison set.

Chronic absenteeism is the school's largest and most fixable gap: 43.5% in 2025‑26, above the district's 34.7% and far above every nearby school, such as 9.7% at River Valley and 26.7% at Bucyrus Middle School. It is down from 59.3% in 2021‑22, but the district has improved faster. Staffing and spending are not the story: Grant's 13.6 students per teacher is the lowest among its larger peers, with mid-range per-pupil spending. Eighth-grade ELA and science have improved each year.
