Summary

Garfield Middle School is a public middle school located in Lakewood, Ohio, serving 469 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Lakewood City School District, which is ranked 179 out of 828 districts in Ohio and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Garfield Middle School has seen some improvements in recent years, it continues to face challenges. The school's test scores are generally lower than the Lakewood City and Ohio state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 8th grade science proficiency rate was 56.8%, compared to the Lakewood City average of 67.3% and the Ohio state average of 63%. Additionally, Garfield Middle School has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 15.2% in 2023-2024 to 26.8% in 2024-2025, which is higher than the district and state averages.

Interestingly, Garfield Middle School's performance varies across different student subgroups. The school ranks highly for African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, but struggles with Special Education and Gifted and Talented students. This suggests that the school may be able to learn from its successes with certain student populations to improve outcomes for others. Additionally, Garfield Middle School's spending per student in 2018-2019 was $8,356, which is lower than the spending at nearby Harding Middle School ($9,173) and Lewis F. Mayer Middle School ($10,269), which may be a contributing factor to its performance challenges.

Open Quote The Staff at this school are some of the most racist human beings I have ever come across. They treat the children different by their race and economic background. They constantly sweep issues under the rug and never address the situation correctly or legally. The janitor physically attached a child there and they let him keep his employment. Unacceptable.
