Fremont Middle School

Fremont Middle School, at 1250 North St in Fremont, Ohio, is the only middle school in Fremont City schools, serving 799 students in grades 6–8 and running about 1.5 times the size of the next-largest middle school in the surrounding area. In 2025–26 it ranked 618th of 1,046 Ohio middle schools (41st percentile, 2 stars), with 62.05% of students economically disadvantaged.

Results inside the school are sharply uneven. Eighth grade is a genuine strength: ELA and math each beat the state by roughly 8 points, and science sits essentially at the state line. Algebra I proficiency is 97.9% against a 61.6% state figure, though that almost certainly reflects a small, selectively accelerated group rather than the whole school. The trouble spots are 6th-grade ELA (27.7% proficient vs. 56.0% statewide) and 7th-grade math (21.0% vs. 48.6%) — gaps of 19 to 33 points that have persisted four years running. Encouragingly, the same students rebound the following year, so these read as localized, recoverable grade-level issues rather than a school-wide ceiling.

Fremont spends $9,892 per student and runs a 14.9:1 student-teacher ratio — better than most neighbors, including Tiffin Middle School and Bellevue Middle School — so results are not a resource or class-size story. What separates it is need and attendance: 62.05% of students are economically disadvantaged, and 24.7% are chronically absent, more than triple Eastwood Middle School's 7.1% and higher than every nearby peer. Low-income students rank 51st percentile (3 stars), and special education students — still the weakest reported group at 24th percentile — have climbed from 3rd. Attendance remains the clearest lever: nearly one in four students misses enough school to be chronically absent.
