Summary

Mifflin Alternative Middle School is a 6–8 middle school at 3000 Agler Rd on Columbus's east side, serving 356 students in the Columbus City Schools District. It is one of the larger middle schools in its comparison group, and the only one with "Alternative" in its name — a designation that typically signals a nontraditional placement setting.

Its academic results are among the weakest in Ohio. In 2025–26 it ranked 972nd of 1,046 middle schools (7th percentile, 0 stars), and it has never exceeded the 17th percentile in ten reported years. Across seven grade and subject tests, an average of 14.7% of students were proficient, versus 29.1% district-wide and 56.4% statewide; 7th-grade math was just 4.8% proficient. Chronic absenteeism is high at 58.5%, but the school cut it by 15.7 percentage points in one year — the largest improvement in its peer group.

Families within a few miles have very different options: Gahanna East Middle School ranks at the 92nd percentile, Midnimo Cross Cultural Middle School at the 64th, Gahanna West Middle School at the 61st, and Minerva Park Middle School at the 56th, while Champion Middle School (6th percentile) is the only nearby school ranked below Mifflin. Mifflin's student–teacher ratio of 14.2 is better than most peers, and its per-pupil spending of $9,853 (2018–19, the only year reported) is above the peer average, so staffing and funding alone don't explain the outcome gap. One bright spot: African American students ranked at the 22nd percentile — above the school as a whole — and 6th-grade ELA proficiency (31.8%) came within 2.2 points of the district.

This was my son's first and LAST year at Mifflin. I have never seen childeren so out of control. I visited during school hours. When the kids was moving to the next class they were so out of control. I was waiting on my son in the office and a student was cursing at the assistant principle threatening to push him down the stairs and Mr.Lam did nothing said nothing. I did love a couple of his teacher, they really seemed to care and you don't find that to often. Do not send your child here!!! Close Quote
