Summary

Almira is a PK–9 alternative school with about 500 students, located at 3375 W 99th St on Cleveland's near-west side, making it one of the largest PK–9 alternative schools in the Cleveland Municipal district.

Almira's clearest strength is attendance. Chronic absenteeism fell from 67.4% in 2021–22 to 46.6% in 2025–26 — roughly a 21-point improvement — and the school now sits 7.7 points better than its district, a reversal from being persistently worse just a few years earlier. Among nearby Cleveland Municipal schools, only Natividad Pagan International Newcomers Academy (40.7%) and William C Bryant Elementary School (40.9%) had lower chronic absenteeism, while Waverly Elementary School (58.0%) and Halle (56.3%) had higher.

Achievement is the concern. Averaged across all 14 reported subject and grade cells for 2025–26, Almira's proficiency is about 20.7%, against 30.7% for Cleveland Municipal and roughly 60.1% for Ohio. Fifth grade is the exception: it is the only grade where Almira matches or beats the district in all three tested subjects, and 5th grade math has outperformed the district three years running. Third grade math is the sharpest warning — 4.2% versus the district's 33.6% — and 8th grade ELA (12.2% vs 29.8%) has also slipped. The most useful comparison is Wilbur Wright School, 0.64 miles away: nearly identical enrollment and attendance (46.3%), yet its average proficiency is about 16 points higher while spending less per student. Almira's classes are also the largest among its Cleveland peers, at 17.8 students per teacher. In short, attendance has improved sharply, but achievement gains have not followed — and a very similar neighbor shows what may be possible.
