Open Quote My child has been at NAM for two years and we are in our third year. We are very happy here. Our teachers have been supportive, helpful, and understanding. My child tested a little bit below benchmark at the beginning of the year and our teacher signed us up for reading intervention and gave me suggestions on how to help my kid get caught up. I have noticed a huge improvement in the last 8 weeks, and I'm sure we will catch up for the next round of testing. My child has made good friends here and is learning a lot.

The new assistant principal is very helpful, engaging, and supportive. Ms. Battle listens to your concerns, and is responsive to emails and questions. She gets things done and is completely invested in helping the school and kids be the best we can be.

We have a variety of school programs and are working on adding more. We have a community green house and the kids take gardening classes. We offer Suzuki method classes for four different instruments. It can be expensive but there are income bracket pricing options available to help. Tap, Ballet, and Modern Dance are all available after school, as well soccer, girl scouts, and probably a few that I'm forgetting. There are additional opportunities at the attached Rec Center.

I think the low marks on here are mostly based on test scores... but test scores are not always indicative of school performance. They are a useful metric, but they are only part of the picture. We are an extremely diverse school with a lot to offer our students.

There's more to the district's efforts than just the grade on a report card. NAM's preschool is rated 5 stars by the Department of Education. We are doing good work here. At the beginning of the 2018 school year it was noted that, CPS' graduation rate is improving, students are doing better on state achievement tests, and literacy among elementary students is improving. Out of six areas evaluated, CPS students improved in five, and remained stable in the last.

Another study showed that between 3rd and 8th grade, CPS actually is covering 5.2 years of schooling instead of just 5. We are working harder and covering more than other districts. (Search for NY Times How Effective is Your School District). Close Quote

Open Quote I don't know where the low star rankings of this school are coming from. Given the demographics of this school and the caliber of the staff and students, this school's ratings should be much higher.
NAMS' community of parents, students and teachers all work together to make a uniquely peaceful and caring environment for all students. The amount of parent involvement has been crucial to the success of the school's community feel and achievements.
During the 2011-2012 and the 2012-2013 school year, the school had staff members leave midway through a school year. This is why the test scores went down for these 2 years- long term subs cannot replace certified staff. With a full staff in place, there is no doubt that scores will improve and stay way up!
Finally, of the 4 Montessori schools, North Avondale is the lone Montessori school that is staying true to the Montessori philosophy- especially at the 9-12 level. Where other schools have divided up their 9-12 levels in actual 4, 5, 6 rooms, NAMS has stayed true to a 9-12 environment. Their commitment to maintaining the ideals of Maria Montessori is evident and is yet one more reason why the school is a success. Close Quote
