Summary

Stambaugh Charter Academy is a K–8 public charter elementary school at 2420 Donald Ave in Youngstown, OH, enrolling 472 students — a mid-sized student body compared with other schools in the Youngstown area. In 2025–2026 it ranked 1117 of 1560 Ohio elementary schools (28th percentile, 1 star), an improvement over the prior year, when it placed 1353 of 1558 (13th percentile). Historically, the school has sat in the bottom quartile, with ranks between roughly 1092 and 1353 over the past decade and mostly 1-star ratings.

Academically, results are uneven. Early reading is a genuine strength: 3rd grade ELA (65.5%) and 4th grade ELA (65%) both came in above state averages, and 8th grade math (50%) was near the state's 52%. But middle-grade and science results lag well behind — 6th grade ELA (23.5%), 7th grade math (17.8%), 5th grade science (26.2%), and 8th grade science (37.5%). Compared with neighbors, Stambaugh generally outperforms Harding Elementary School and Summit Academy-Youngstown, and is mixed against Youngstown Community School and Southside Academy. Austintown Intermediate School is far stronger, with 84.2% math and 82.9% ELA in 3rd grade.

Attendance remains the biggest challenge: 52.6% of students were chronically absent in 2025–2026, though that is down from 73.2% four years earlier. It is better than Harding (62.9%) and Southside (59.4%) but worse than Youngstown Community (22.4%), Prospect Elementary School (17.8%), and Austintown's 17.3–18.5%. The student–teacher ratio of 11.8 is favorable versus most local schools. Gains for students with disabilities (34th percentile, up from 1st) and low-income students (32nd percentile, up from 13%) suggest targeted supports are helping, and several student groups rank above the school's overall 28th percentile. Note that free/reduced-lunch data are not reported, and spending figures date to 2018–2019.

Open Quote The school used to be a good one when it first opened but is now overrun by inner-city kids and staff. The principal is oblivious to what's going on around him, and the the teachers are just there for the money. If you have the opportunity to take your child elsewhere do so. By the way, and to reinforce what another parent wrote, the school has a big bullying problem and no one seems to care. There's no PTO, teachers don't communicate with parents, and every other week there's some kind of fund raiser. It's all about money. Close Quote
