Summary

Ohio Virtual Academy is a public charter virtual school located in Maumee, OH, serving grades K-12 with an enrollment of 13,997 students. While the school has seen a gradual improvement in its four-year graduation rate, increasing from 55.9% in 2020-2021 to 72.1% in 2024-2025, its chronic absenteeism rate has also increased from 5.0% in 2021-2022 to 6.9% in 2024-2025.

Compared to state averages, Ohio Virtual Academy's test scores are significantly lower across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's proficiency rates in Mathematics ranged from 18.6% to 30.2%, compared to the state averages of 51.9% to 64.4%. Similarly, in English Language Arts, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 29.4% to 46.8%, compared to the state averages of 54.4% to 67.7%. Additionally, the school's four-year graduation rate of 72.1% in 2024-2025 is lower than the state average of around 85-90%.

When comparing Ohio Virtual Academy to nearby schools, such as Horizon Science Academy Toledo and Northwest Ohio Classical Academy, both public charter schools in the area, it becomes evident that the virtual school struggles to match the performance of its brick-and-mortar counterparts. This suggests that Ohio Virtual Academy may face unique challenges in providing a quality education in a virtual setting, which could be contributing to the lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism rates.

Open Quote My son ranks with advanced in Math and accelerated in reading. This is a public school online. Not Homeschool. It has its own category. Learning Coaches must be involved. I like that. He does better here than in our school district. In my opinion our district purposly tried to keep our sons grade low so they could get IEP money. Due to the fact it is not a title one school, The Hearing Aid Lady had more power than the teachers. This is my opinon based on my expericnces. I could go on and I have the test scores to prove it.
