Summary

Washington Park Community School is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Newburgh Heights, Ohio, with a total enrollment of 160 students. The school is part of the Washington Park Community School District, which is ranked 651 out of 828 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

One of the key challenges facing Washington Park Community School is its consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 33.4% in 2020-2021 to 83.4% in 2023-2024, which is significantly higher than the state average and nearby schools like Cuyahoga Hts Elementary School. This high absenteeism appears to be closely linked to the school's poor academic performance, with proficiency rates on Ohio State Tests falling well below state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's math proficiency rates ranged from 7.7% to 92.3%, compared to the state average of 47.6% to 69.1%.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Horizon Science Academy-Denison Middle School, demonstrate significantly higher academic performance and lower chronic absenteeism rates compared to Washington Park Community School. This suggests that there may be opportunities to learn from the practices and strategies employed by these higher-performing schools. Additionally, the school's relatively low spending per student of $6,742, compared to nearby schools like Mound Elementary School at $13,209, may be a contributing factor to its poor academic outcomes, indicating a need to re-evaluate resource allocation and funding priorities.

Open Quote Please take a look at the overall school ranking. It is literally one of the worst in the state. An F on the state report card is the outcome each year. The middle school principal has zero qualifications for the position. She was a poor kindergarten teacher that got the position because she keeps her mouth shut about the deplorable conditions within this school. There is mold in the basement, and bullying incidents are ignored. Go to any other school rating site and hopefully you can see the true picture. Not the rosy picture the administration paints. Stay away. Close Quote
