Summary

Meachem Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in the Syracuse City School District, with 340 students. Despite its relatively small size, the school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in New York state, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

Meachem Elementary's academic performance is significantly below state and district averages. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 25% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA, compared to 54.15% statewide. The school's math proficiency rates are also very low, ranging from 16-34% across grades 3-5. This persistent low performance is in stark contrast to nearby schools like Roberts K-8 School and Syracuse Latin School, which outperform Meachem Elementary by a wide margin on state assessments.

Despite the school's high percentage of students from low-income families (88.24% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and relatively high per-student spending (ranging from $19,274 to $33,256 per student), Meachem Elementary's academic outcomes remain poor. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be the solution, and that the school may need to re-evaluate how resources are allocated and utilized to support student learning. The school's challenges appear to be deep-rooted, and a comprehensive, data-driven approach to school improvement may be necessary to drive meaningful change.
