Summary

Stephen T Mather Building Arts And Craftmanship High School is a public high school in New York City's New York City Geographic District # 2, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 358.

The school faces significant challenges, with academic performance well below district and state averages across most subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 12.5% in Geometry to 63.11% in English Language Arts, compared to the district averages of 51.87% and 79.33% respectively. The school also struggles with low graduation rates, high chronic absenteeism, and varying performance across different student subgroups. Despite higher per-student spending and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school has not seen significant improvements in academic outcomes.

Interestingly, the school is located in close proximity to several other public high schools, including Business Of Sports School, Urban Assembly Gateway School For Technology, and Manhattan Bridges High School, which generally outperform Stephen T Mather Building Arts And Craftmanship High School on academic measures. The school's specialized curriculum in building arts and craftsmanship may be a unique aspect, but it is unclear how this is impacting student outcomes.

Open Quote I worked here in the school's second year, and I have nothing but VAST respect for the very professional staff and administration. These people were smart, dedicated professionals who really knew what they were doing. In those first couple years there were some students who went there more because they couldn't get into any other schools, and weren't really interested in Mather itself. But I'm sure as word spreads of the amazing out-of-the-box things you can learn here that other schools don't offer, it will fill with great students who WANT to be there. Close Quote
