North Star Online School is a K–12 alternative school in Reno, Nevada, serving 575 students as part of the Washoe County district, which is rated 4 stars and ranks 4th of 12 districts in Nevada (67th percentile). It is far larger than the two nearby alternative schools: Turning Point, with 14 students, and Marvin Picollo Elementary, with 91. North Star is more than 6 times larger than Marvin Picollo and more than 40 times larger than Turning Point, and it is the only one of the three with substantial reported academic and graduation data.

Academically, science is the school's clearest strength: all-grades SBAC science was 29.2% in 2025–2026, above the district (26.3%) and state (25.5%). Math is the weakest area. All-grades SBAC math was 16.5%, well below the district's 37.0% and the state's 36.2%, and middle-school math was especially low — 6th grade 17.8%, 7th grade 14.4%, and 8th grade 12.7%. ACT math in 11th grade was 5.6%, versus 26.9% district and 22.6% state. Reading has declined across recent years, from 55.6% in 2022–2023 to 37.0% in 2025–2026, though 8th-grade reading (44.1%) was above district and state. ACT English has swung widely, from 62.5% to 25.1%. Some grade-level results, including 3rd and 5th grade math and 3rd and 4th grade reading, were suppressed by the state.

Chronic absenteeism was a relative strength for years — between 13.1% and 17.4% from 2021–2022 through 2024–2025 — before rising to 28.4% in 2025–2026, slightly above the district (27.5%) and state (25.5%), yet still far below Turning Point (78.5%) and Marvin Picollo (48.4%). Graduation rates are mixed: 85.3% in 2023–2024 was above district and state, while 80.0% in 2024–2025 fell below the district's 83.3% and the state's 85.4%. Compared with the nearby schools, North Star serves a lower free/reduced-lunch population (37.04% in 2024–2025 versus 100% at both neighbors), spends much less per student ($8,573 in 2023–2024 versus $143,342 and $64,940), and has a much higher student-teacher ratio (26.1 versus 1.4 and 5.0). Because the nearby schools' test scores are largely suppressed, direct academic comparisons to them are not possible.
