Summary

Sparks Middle School is a grades 6–8 school with 622 students in Sparks, Nevada, part of the Washoe County district. In 2025–26 it ranked 137th of 148 Nevada middle schools — the 7th percentile with 0 stars — far below its own district, which ranks 4th of 12 statewide (67th percentile, 4 stars). Recent years have been persistently low: 142nd of 151 in 2024–25 (6th percentile), 134th of 153 in 2023–24 (12th percentile), and 152nd of 152 in 2022–23. Earlier years were less low — around the 23rd–25th percentile from 2016–17 through 2018–19 — so the school has been on a long relative decline.

The school serves a high-poverty population: 100% free or reduced lunch in each of the last three reported years. Chronic absenteeism was 31.8% in 2025–26, above the district's 27.5% and the state's 25.5%, though down from 47.5% in 2022–23. Achievement is low across subjects: 14% proficient in math, 20.4% in reading, and 11.1% in science, versus district rates of 37%, 44.4%, and 26.3%. Reading is the relative bright spot (7th grade reading reaches 26.2%) but is still roughly half the district and state rates; math is uniformly low across grades 6–8, and science fell from 16.7% to 11.1%.

Nearby comparisons are telling. Sky Ranch Middle School (71st percentile, 4 stars) and Darrel Swope Middle School (70th percentile, 4 stars) post far higher proficiency but serve only about 23% and 28% low-income students. Poverty doesn't determine outcomes, though: Archie Clayton Pre-A.P. Academy is also 100% free/reduced lunch with higher absenteeism (41.1%) yet reaches 29.5% in math and 43.9% in reading, and Lou Mendive Middle School also clearly outperforms Sparks. Money and class size don't explain the gap either — Sparks spends $12,619 per student with a 19.4 student-teacher ratio, more spending and smaller classes than several higher-performing schools. Sparks does edge out Edward L. Pine Middle School and E. Otis Vaughn Middle School, but remains in the bottom 7% of Nevada middle schools.
