Open Quote Before the administration changes, this school was great. However, the past three years have been wrought with problems regarding discipline, recess access, free restroom access, and lunchroom management issues. For reference, Elko County has adopted a 4-day school week with 8-hour school days for K-12. Bad behavior is dealt with by restricting access to recess or taking recess minutes away without communication with the parent or guardian. If a teacher has recess duty, the student is made to "walk the line", referring to painted white lines on the pavement while others play. Some teachers use "teacher bucks" for access to the restroom, wherein students receive teacher bucks weekly and are made to ration them appropriately or choose to save them for a prize at the end of the year. If a student doesn't have enough teacher bucks for the restroom, they "owe" the teacher a buck when they are distributed. Students are encouraged to wait to use the restroom during lunch and recess breaks. Lunchroom management includes a handful of "lunch ladies" walking around with garbage cans, making sure students are eating their food and being silent during quiet time. If students are caught talking during this time, they are told to "get on the wall", which means they have to take their belongings and stand against one of four walls within the lunchroom and get lunch recess minutes taken away. Some Lunch aides seem unforgiving and have been witnessed berating students who misbehave. Issues brought to Mtn. View administration is blown off at best. The principal seems uninterested in any conflict management and seems adversarial to parents who bring concerns. The vice principal is flippant and rude to anyone who disagrees with her or causes her to do "extra work". The counselor is disinterested at best, negligent at worst. She doesn't communicate well with parents or students and is often not around to help where she is needed. The only silver lining is the saint of a nurse who has seemingly taken on the duties of counselor and nurse. She communicates with parents very well and has always made my children feel safe and seen. My children hate going to school not only due to the absurdly long school day, but also because the staff is burned out, unpassionate, and cannot communicate better to help our students. This review will show you what school ratings just can't. I hope this helps whoever is looking for an honest review of Mtn. View Elementary. Close Quote
