Southside Elementary School is a PK–4 school in Elko, NV, serving 511 students, the largest enrollment among nearby elementary schools in the Elko district. The district ranks 6th of 12 districts statewide. Southside currently holds a 2-star rating, ranking 234th of 376 Nevada elementary schools (38th percentile) in 2025-26, down from 179th of 379 (53rd percentile, 3 stars) the previous year. Historically the school has swung widely, from as low as the 6th percentile in 2021-22 to the 45th percentile in 2018-19.

The school's defining academic feature is a split between subjects. In 2025-26, all-grade math proficiency was 42.9%, above both the district (27.6%) and state (36.2%). Reading was 31.5%, below the district (33.2%) and far below the state (45.2%). Reading also fell sharply from 43.1% the year before, an 11.6 percentage point decline that likely drove the overall rating drop. Fourth-grade math was a clear strength at 47.5%, above district and state. Third-grade math (38.4%) and reading in both tested grades (3rd: 31.4%, 4th: 31.6%) were below state levels, suggesting early literacy and third-grade math need attention.

Southside serves a high-poverty population, with 100% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, and has the largest classes among nearby district elementaries (21.2 students per teacher in 2024-25). Even so, it outperforms Northside Elementary School in both subjects despite Northside's smaller classes and higher per-student spending. Grammar School 2, which also serves 100% free/reduced lunch students, achieves much higher reading (47.1%) and math (50.9%), making it a useful model. Chronic absenteeism has improved dramatically, from 60.8% in 2021-22 to 26.0% in 2025-26, now below the district (29.0%) and just above the state (25.5%).
