Summary

Ortwein Dennis Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Las Vegas, Nevada, enrolling 828 students in the Clark County School District, which makes it one of the larger elementary schools in its immediate area. It currently holds a 3-star rating and ranked 172nd of 376 Nevada elementary schools in 2025–26, placing it at the 54th percentile — slightly above the state median. That continues a steady improvement from 2-star ratings in 2020–21 and 2021–22.

Reading is Ortwein's clearest strength: 52.1% of students met proficiency standards in 2025–26, above the district's 43.3% and the state's 45.2%. Math is also solid at 40.7%, compared with 33.8% district-wide and 36.2% statewide. Science, however, is a persistent weakness at 13.8%, far below district and state and below nearby schools such as Gehring Roger D Academy of Science & Technology Elementary School at 63.8%, Stuckey Evelyn Elementary School at 35.7%, Bass John C Elementary School at 31.5%, and Schorr Steve Elementary School at 26.5%. Grade-level results show a sharp split: 3rd- and 4th-grade math are strong at 52.8% and 51.0%, but 5th-grade math falls to 19.7%. Fifth-grade reading, at 55.2%, is the school's best reading grade. Nearby same-district schools average about 48.9% in math and 56.8% in reading, so Ortwein looks more modest locally than it does statewide.

Attendance is worth watching. Chronic absenteeism improved from 35.4% in 2021–22 to 20.6% in 2024–25, then rose to 27.3% in 2025–26 — above the district, state, and the nearby same-district average of about 23.1%. Schools with lower absenteeism, such as Gehring at 5.0%, tend to post stronger proficiency results. Ortwein also runs leaner than many neighbors: 828 students versus a nearby average of about 620, per-student spending of $13,820 versus about $14,573, and a student–teacher ratio of 17.2 versus about 15.8. Even so, it still beats district and state in reading and math. Pinecrest Academy of Nevada St Rose, a charter school in the State Sponsored Charter Schools district, spends less per student but serves a very different population, so it is not a direct comparison.
