Cortez Manuel J Elementary School is a PK–5 school at 4245 E Tonopah Ave in Las Vegas serving 661 students in the Clark County school district — the largest enrollment in its immediate neighborhood comparison group, and one where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Chronic absenteeism is 33.8% — the second-highest in the neighborhood and about four times the rate at nearby Miller Sandy Searles Elementary School (8.6%) and Heard Lomie G Elementary School (10.0%). It has improved from 54.2% in 2021-22, but the district improved nearly as quickly, so the gap to district has actually widened.

Resources do not appear to explain the gap. Cortez spends $20,112 per student — the highest in its comparison set — with the smallest classes, at 14.0 students per teacher. Tate Myrtle Elementary School, 0.86 miles away with nearly identical enrollment and demographics, outperforms Cortez by 8.0 points in math and 6.6 points in reading while spending $2,667 less per student and running larger classes; Miller Sandy Searles Elementary School more than doubles Cortez's reading proficiency under the same conditions. Grade-level results point to 5th-grade math (12.8%) and 3rd-grade reading (16.3%) as the weakest spots, with 4th grade the strongest and most balanced cohort.
