One relative bright spot is attendance. Hewetson’s chronic absenteeism was 22.3% in 2025–2026, below the district (27.0%) and state (25.5%), and better than every nearby same-district school except Bracken Walter Elementary School (8.4%). Bracken Walter Elementary School is a striking nearby comparison: it serves a similarly high-poverty population, spends only slightly more ($14,568 vs. $14,007), and has a lower student–teacher ratio (16.0 vs. 17.9), yet its 2025–2026 proficiency is much higher (54% math, 60.5% reading, 34% science) and its absenteeism is far lower. Strong Start Academy, a nearby charter, also posts much stronger results: 65.9% math, 81.9% reading, 12.9% absenteeism, and $23,669 per student, ranking 28 of 376 (93rd percentile, 5 stars).
