Summary

Strong Start Academy is a small K–5 state-sponsored charter school with 216 students at 310 S 9th St in downtown Las Vegas (89101), and in 2025–2026 it ranked 28th of 376 Nevada elementary schools — the top-performing school in this entire comparison group, up sharply from 85th of 379 the year before.

Its results stand well apart from the neighborhood Clark County schools. In 2025–2026, 65.9% of students met standards in math and 81.9% in reading, compared with about 21.7% and 26.3% on average across the nearby campuses. Crestwood Elementary School, the strongest nearby conventional school, reached 41.1% in math and 41.5% in reading — roughly half of Strong Start's reading figure. Chronic absenteeism at Strong Start is 12.9%, the lowest in the group and about a third of the nearby average of roughly 33%; the surrounding schools run from 14.6% at Crestwood up to 47.1%. Notably, 100% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, identical to the nine nearby Clark County schools, so these outcomes are not explained by serving a more affluent population. Strong Start spends $23,669 per student, about 31% above the nearby average, though its student–teacher ratio of 16.6 is only mid-pack.

Two things are worth watching. Fifth-grade math is the one soft spot: 39.2% of fifth graders met standards, below the Clark County figure of 47.6%, even though third grade hit 84.7%. And the 25.7-point single-year jump in reading departs from the prior pattern, when reading trailed the Clark County average; with about 100 tested students, one student is worth roughly a percentage point, so the direction is clear but the size deserves a cautious read. Science results are not reported, so nothing can be said about science either way. Also keep in mind that Strong Start is a charter school with a choice-based enrollment, unlike the neighborhood schools nearby, so family choice may account for part of the gap.
