Thoreau Middle is a grades 6–8 school serving 362 students at 8 Hawk Circle in Thoreau, New Mexico, part of the Gallup-McKinley City Schools district, which itself ranks in the lower third of New Mexico districts (60th of 87). The school has placed near the bottom of New Mexico middle schools for a decade — between the 7th and 28th percentile in every reported year since 2014–15, never earning more than one star.
