Summary

George I Sanchez is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with 1,099 students enrolled. The school consistently underperforms the Albuquerque and New Mexico state averages in proficiency rates for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science across all grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 32.68% of students were proficient or better in ELA compared to 43.65% for Albuquerque and 44.19% for the state. In Math, the proficiency rate was just 11.3% compared to 26.48% for Albuquerque and 26.81% for the state.

George I Sanchez struggles to serve certain student subgroups effectively, with its rankings for African American, Hispanic, White, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students all in the bottom quarter of New Mexico elementary schools. The school's statewide ranking has steadily declined from 321 out of 383 elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 319 out of 345 in 2024-2025, and its star rating has remained at 1 out of 5 for the past several years, indicating persistent underperformance.

Interestingly, the other elementary schools in the immediate vicinity of George I Sanchez, such as Adobe Acres, Maryann Binford, and Carlos Rey, also struggle academically but generally perform better than George I Sanchez across the board. This suggests George I Sanchez may face unique challenges beyond just being in a high-poverty Albuquerque district.

Open Quote Former teacher. Don't work there. The kids and families are worth it. The administration is not. They pick favorites, based on things that have nothing to do with work performance. They seem OK at first but they're pretty shady. Incompetent, but have no clue that they are. The students enrolled there deserve better. Close Quote
