Summary

Edward Gonzales Elementary is a grades 3–5 school serving 339 students in Albuquerque's South Valley / West Mesa area, part of Albuquerque Public Schools, where every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch and student–teacher ratios have improved three years running. It sits in the bottom fifth of New Mexico elementary rankings, but it is currently the strongest of the APS campuses in its immediate neighborhood.

The clearest positive is reading: language arts proficiency has risen four years in a row, from 24% to 39.7%, narrowing the gap with the district and state to about 4 points, and grade 5 language arts (45.54%) actually beats both. Mathematics is the opposite story — 15.15% proficiency, roughly 10 points below the state, with a reading–math gap wider than the district's or state's, and math has barely moved in four years. Performance also climbs sharply by grade, so the third graders arriving from nearby Helen Cordero Primary are the school's weakest performers, making growth from grade 3 to grade 5 the fairer measure of what Gonzales adds.
